Corus Cogifer supplies longest switch to be installed in the UK

28 Oct 2005

Corus Cogifer a joint venture between Corus and Vossloh Cogifer, has successfully manufactured the longest switch of its type to be installed in the UK rail network. The 45m long H type switch, uses type UIC 60 rail and was forged and machined at the Vossloh Cogifer's plant in France and shipped to Corus Cogifer’s site in Scunthorpe by rail.

For onward delivery to the customer Corus Cogifer had to transport the switch by road.  A special flat bed truck was used and Corus Cogifer made specific adaptions for safe onward delivery.  A special support beam ensured the switch was clear of any vehicles and buildings during transportation.  The beam, which was also manufactured by Corus Cogifer, features a unique adjustment and alignment system to ensure quick and easy assembly on both even and uneven ground.

The switch will be tested for a period by Network Rail before full approval, and once approved the switch will be installed on the UK network at Rugby Trent Valley to permit speeds of up to 125 miles per hour.
